An Experiment with an Air Pump
Role: Scenic Designer
Project Type: Theatrical Production
Spring 2024
An Experiment with an Air Pump by Shelagh Stephenson is a play split between two time periods, 1799 and 1999, in the same house in the United Kingdom. Dissecting gender roles between both centuries and the ethics of using human life for scientific advancement, the scientists in the 1799 household pursue a Scottish maid with severe spine related disability, while the scientists in 1999 debate the ethics of using human embryos for stem cell research. This turn of the century play dives into both generations in what turns out to be part love story and part detective story.
The final design features a runway- style stage to create two independent- yet-connected spaces, with a bridge connecting the two to be used for more intimate scenes. To complement the runway-style stage, audience members will be seated on both sides of the platforms, giving each person a unique experience and perspective of the show.
Finalized design model, featuring pieces made out of chipboard, mat board, card stock, basswood, and 3D printed furniture.
Images adjusted in Photoshop.
A deconstructed roof spans the entire length of the room to further create an intimate space and pull the audience in.
The space beneath the platforms is filled with items that the families have collected over time, with key props to be illuminated during certain scenes.
